Mr. Miyagi teaches us more than just Karate by Elliot Kay
I was lying there all jet lagged, after a trip to the very Sunny LA (a new home for my Life Coaching practice). I was thinking what a big step I will be taking, moving to LA, and about my first blog for My Life Image, what should I write this week??? Then a thought slipped into my jet lagged head: Did Mr. Miyagi from the Karate Kid capture the essence of Life Coaching – what it takes to take on change in your life? What a strange and interesting concept, I started to break it down…
It is the scene in Karate Kid 1, when Daniel son finds Mr. Miyagi’s war medal. Daniel son thinks that this is amazing, and does what every young teenager would do, he raps it up, puts it in a gift box, and hands it to Mr. Miyagi. When Daniel son presents it to him, Mr. Miyagi thanks him but is not impressed…and then there is the moment, the essence… Mr. Miyagi turns to Daniel son and says: “Medal means you are lucky (Mr. Miyagi puts his hands on Daniels sons chest) this mean you are brave.
“Wow! How true (and yet so cheesy), how simple can it be to define Change and Life Coaching? Well very simple, as Mr. Miyagi proves.Everyday we wear our medals in various shapes and forms, nice trendy clothes, jewelry, various types of cars we drive – of course the list varies from person to person. Are these simple attempts to show how lucky we are? It seems a little hollow to me.Mr. Miyagi had it spot on; we can have all luck in the world, where will it get us without courage? Bravery?
In 12 months I will take a massive life changing step, what ever medal I dress up in, it won’t happen unless I am brave enough to make it happen, even luck runs out. Mr. Miyagi also had it right when he puts his hands on Daniel son’s chest, “who needs medals when our best guide is within us? Our heart.”
The truth, I knew as soon as I spent a few days out in LA that my heart was already there and I was doing the right thing, it won’t be easy, as changing your life never is. We all have the courage to do what ever we set our minds to! That is the medal and the reward, it might work out slightly differently, at least you followed your heart! There it is Mr. Miyagi’s vision: courage and bravery, not external forces but inner forces, YOU, That’s what it is about.
Mr. Miyagi I salute you!

I found Eliiots blog very interesting and true to life.
It motivates you to take a step back and think about the future and possible changes in your future life.
I have heard of Elliots Life Coaching Sessions, but as yet not experienced one.
Definatley something to think about.
Well done.

Elliot’s story reminds one of the three characters in The Wizard of Oz – the scarecrow who needed a brain, the lion who needed courage and the tinman who needed a heart. The wizard (who really has no magical powers) convinces each one that if they have confidence in their own worth, they can overcome all obstacles. We’re sure Elliot, like them will succeed in his life changing move to L.A.

Elliot seems to have a wise head on young shoulders (I guess they are young!). It takes courage and a sense of adventure to change one’s life so drastically, it also requires the ability to dream and plan, and make them all come true.
I’m sure he will do very well in LA and he should be an excellent life coach!

I couldn’t agree more with Elliot’s ‘Mr Miyagi’ analogy of Change and Life Coaching. Life is all about change and therefore opportunities. Elliot embraces change with an energy and passion which is infectious!
Elliot understands that courage and bravery are pre-requisites in order to be proactive, to seize the day, and is able to tap into these qualities with ease! His insights are inspirational. I know because he has challenged me to challenge myself for the better part of this year.
If success is happiness, I know Elliot will have LA smiling all the way!
